CATALINA 42

The Catalina 42 is a very popular yacht in the US (where she was manufactured) although not so well known in Europe, which is surprising given their excellent sailing performance combined with very spacious and comfortable accommodation below decks. Viewing is recommended to fully appreciate this yacht and what she has to offer.

A walkthrough transom leads to the very large and comfortable aft cockpit where a smaller diameter steering wheel gives easy access when going forward (larger original wheel is available). These yachts have an excellent sailing performance and are especially close winded aided by the wing keel.  Both genoa and mainsail are furling for ease of operation and wide side-decks with attractive blue/grey integrally moulded non-slip make going forward easy.

Below decks is where the Catalina 42 really stands apart from similar sized competition. This example is the two cabin Pullman/owners version.  On descending the companionway steps the galley is located to port with large fridge compartment and good stowage and worktop areas. Aft of the galley is a passageway allowing access to the engine and generator and also to a large storage area under the cockpit.

Opposite the galley to starboard is a heads/shower compartment and aft of this is a double cabin with plenty of lockers, drawers etc and an escape hatch to the cockpit. The main saloon is very spacious with excellent headroom and is extremely light and airy. There is ‘U’ shaped seating around the saloon table to port with further seating and the chart table / nav area and main switch panel opposite to starboard. Forward of this is the owners cabin with the double berth offset to port with stowage opposite to starboard. A very spacious en-suite heads compartment with separate shower stall is located forward.  This is a clever and sensible design which maximises space in what is a narrowing section of the yacht. There are many opening port-lights for good ventilation throughout.
