AMEL SUPER MARAMU
The Amel Super Maramu is a sought after blue water cruiser and deservedly so with their very clever and innovative design ideas that are both simple and highly effective. Combine this with the quality construction and the result is a go anywhere cruiser that is a pleasure to liveaboard and easy to operate short-handed. She represents amazing value for money with her recent price reduction.
These are truly unique yachts and have a very loyal band of appreciative owners. I believe all yacht designers could learn something from the Amel Super Maramu! Her superior design features include clever storage ideas, watertight bulkheads and compartments, simple but effective tank gauges, locker lids secured simply from inside the yacht and mechanical back-up for the electric furling systems being just a few of the myriad of ideas and efficient design.
On boarding this yacht from the stern passerelle/combined swimming ladder, you step across a very large stern lazerette. The coach roof above the aft cabin has additional cushions for sunbathing. Forward of this is the secure feeling centre cockpit with the helm position well protected by the fixed screen at the forward end maximising use of space. The aft end of the cockpit has the mizzen mast and its associated control lines. Access to the machinery room is under the cockpit sole and this houses the generator, main engine, watermaker, calorifier, batteries, charger etc and there is excellent access all round for maintenance. The main engine drives the propeller via a hydraulic drive and is in a well protected position at the aft end of the wing keel. The foredeck houses the anchor winch with the chain stowed low in the anchor locker, aft of which are two good sized storage lazerettes, mainsail and genoa have electrically operated furling systems with mechanical back-up. The cutter/ketch rig gives a versatile sail plan.
Below decks the spacious and practical galley runs across the yacht midships to port with the chart table and navigation area to starboard. Both are sensibly located in the area of least motion whilst at sea. Forward of the galley is the saloon with ‘U’ shaped seating to port around the table and a straight settee to starboard with a slide out sea berth over. Going forward through a watertight bulkhead door is a walk thru to the forward cabin with a good sized heads/shower compartment to port with hanging locker stowage to starboard. The forward cabin has twin berths with leeboards but can convert to a double and has excellent stowage throughout. The retractable bow thruster is located in the forward end of this cabin.
Aft of the chart table is the walk thru with pilot berth to the owners’ en-suite double cabin. The double berth is offset to port and again has leeboards for use at sea, with a dressing table to starboard and excellent stowage throughout. Quality fabrics are used with excellent joinery and varnish work and combined give a feeling of luxury, but it is the incorporation of intelligent design that sets these yachts apart and this example has an extensive equipment list to include air-conditioning, heating, washing machine and dishwasher etc.
